Typing is a complex cognitive and motor skill that requires the coordination of multiple brain areas. When reading text to type, visual word forms are processed in the occipital lobe and sent to the left hemisphere language center (Wernicke's and Broca's areas) for lexical recognition. Instead of processing letters individually, the brain translates words into motor chunks—pre-programmed sequences of finger movements stored in the supplementary motor area (SMA) and premotor cortex. The motor cortex executes these programs, sending commands to both hands. As the fingers strike the keys, tactile feedback from somatosensory receptors and auditory feedback from key clicks are processed in real-time, allowing the brain to confirm successful keystrokes and adjust finger positioning without looking at the keyboard.
