Task prioritization requires a dynamic interaction between the prefrontal cortex and sensory gating systems. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) monitors performance and signals when a shift in focus is required. Attentional gating occurs in the thalamus, which acts as a filter, suppressing sensory input from low-priority tasks while routing target signals to primary processing areas. Shifting focus from one task to another requires updating the working memory buffer with new task rules, engaging the frontoparietal control network to re-allocate attentional resources.
