Fine motor control of the hand and fingers requires precise coordination of small muscles, managed by the motor cortex and the corticospinal tract. When targeting a small object, the motor cortex recruits specific motor units—a motor neuron and the muscle fibers it innervates. To achieve high precision, the brain recruits small, slow-twitch motor units (Henneman's size principle), which provide fine control but lower force. The somatosensory cortex processes tactile feedback from the hand, while the visual system tracks the cursor's alignment with the target. Any motor noise—variability in muscle activation or nerve conduction—can cause micro-tremors, leading to targeting errors. Managing motor noise requires stable posture, proper wrist support, and developed motor memory.
