Fluid intelligence (Gf)—the ability to reason and solve novel problems independent of prior knowledge—relies on the lateral prefrontal cortex, posterior parietal cortex, and their white matter connections, collectively known as the parieto-frontal integration theory (P-FIT) network. When solving a matrix reasoning puzzle, the visual system processes the shapes and patterns, projecting them to the parietal lobe for spatial mapping. The prefrontal cortex analyzes the relationships between the elements (such as color transitions, rotation rules, or shape progression), generating hypotheses in working memory. The frontopolar cortex manages high-level relational integration, combining multiple rules to identify the correct missing piece. Synaptic efficiency, axonal myelination, and the volume of prefrontal gray matter are key biological determinants of fluid intelligence speed and capacity.
